The day is finally here. We are approximately 7 miles and 45 minutes away from the museum. Thanks traffic! Still excited though.

Tomorrow the Architectural Design Academy sets off for NYC. We have an amazing trip planned. We are heading to the Guggenheim museum for a special architectural tour of the building and a workshop. We will then venture into Central Park to witness the beauty and do some sketching. We will then make our way down to the business district of the city as we have been invited to KPF architects for a tour and presentation. We are really excited at the opportunity this trip will provide our students. More to come! Another great showcase has come and gone. First off, I would like to take a minute to thank everyone that was able to attend the event yesterday. We have such a fantastic group of mentors and we are very grateful that they are able to be a part of our program. If you were unable to attend the event, please have a look at the photos attached below. We think the event turned out amazing. The project this year was to design a vacation home for the pickiest person I know, ME. To start, each student was assigned a region of the US. They were then to select a site on a lake in their region. The program for the house was: 2700-3000sq ft, 1st floor Master's Suite, 3 bedrooms on 2nd level, a large loft area designed to house of a pool table and seating area, in the style of Modern architecture. As the project stated the students realized that there was a lot of freedom with the design and creativity started to take over. Over the next few weeks, the students went through iterations after iterations until they were happy with their design. Going through rolls and rolls of bumwad (trace), the projects started to develop. From this point they worked on massing models, final design sketches, AutoCAD floor plans, and presentation models. This was very large and rigorous project for the students. As the instructor of these great young men and women, I am very proud of their success. One of the comments that was heard more than once yesterday was "I can't believe I'm looking at high school work." To me this really sums up the dedication of the students. Please feel free to comment below. The students of the Advanced Architectural Design Academy have been hard at work putting the final touches on their designs.
Good afternoon,
I'm am proud to announce that we are continuing a long-standing tradition at the ARL with the Annual Architectural Design Academy Student Showcase. This year's project was based on the students designing a vacation home for a very picky client......me. The program consisted of a 2700-3000sf 2-story modern styled home located on a lakefront site. This has been an exciting project for the students as they have had to really work through the process. The students are excited to share their designs with you and continue this tradition with your participation. As an architectural professional, we are asking you to review the student's work, as well as, share your expertise on each student's technical skills and professional performance at the Architectural Design Academy Student Showcase on Jan. 26, 2015. This senior class has worked very hard to master curriculum content, architectural concepts, design processes, as well as, professional skills. Our students would like to demonstrate this acquired knowledge through a presentation format that will highlight their design process and project. Your review will become a part of their grade and help to prepare them for an upcoming internship in Feb of 2015. The showcase also provides the opportunity to self-select an intern for an off campus internship. These internships touch the lives of our students and assists in creating Howard County's future workforce. Your time and effort will also enable our Architectural Design students to gain industry knowledge and experience by networking with local architects within the business community. If a student impresses you, please feel free to meet with either Anita or I before you leave. Showcase Schedule: 11:10-11:20 Meet and Mingle in Architectural classroom A-9 11:20-11:30 Remain in A-9 for introduction, overview, and evaluation process. 11:30-1:00 Visitors will join the students in the Boardroom (B-37) for their presentation, there will be 15 students presenting their work. Anita and I look forward to hearing from you by Jan. 16th and working with you on Jan. 26th! Sincerely, Terry Walker Email and Anita Brown-Lee Email THE COLLEGE OF FINE + APPLIED ARTS at University of Illnois at Urbana-Champaign is offering an Architectural Drawing contest. I'm encouraging all of my students to enter the contest. You are competing for a scholarship to attend either an FAA College program or a 2015 summer program.

I was in your shoes just two years ago! (Wow, that so weird saying that…time flies!) I am a freshman at Philadelphia University, and I am majoring in architecture like many of you. This is currently my fifth week at PhilaU, and I would like to share my experience with you! (You can read in further detail on my blog at rachelsphilauexperience.weebly.com and see pictures of my projects too!) I mainly talk about my Design 1 and Drawing 101 class on my blog. Basically these classes are similar to Mr. Walker’s design class! Design 1 is very similar to the Architectural Design class (Junior Year). It’s very conceptual—they are trying to teach you to become designers. Our current project is working with Mondrian paintings, and trying to make them into three dimensional objects (cubes). The project before that we were making shoes out of cardboard, learning to see the shoe as slices/contours. In my Drawing 101 class, we are working on various techniques. I have actually never taken an art class, so it is a new experience for me. (I have always managed to find my away around not knowing much about art.) We have drawn leaves, buildings, compositions of chairs, etc. using different drawing styles (contour drawings, figure-ground, tone). While some of these projects sound a little cheesy, you will actually be surprised how much you learn from them! You become better analyzers of detail, you learn processes of design, and you learn to have fun and to be a little crazy! I absolutely love my design and drawing class! You will be prepared very well for these classes in college, because you have taken this class. About 50% students here have had an architecture course in high school, but the other 50% have not. I am not saying that these classes in college are easy, because they are not; they are a lot of work! (You must manage your time!!!!) But this class will help you prepare and will make the work slightly easier to handle. Seeing what you all can do, I know you all will do great in architectural schools; Mr. Walker is preparing you well! Keep up the good work! Please check out Philadelphia University, if you have not already! It’s a small design school right out of the city! There are about 3,000 students, and we have degrees from Fashion Design to Interior Design to Architecture to Physicians Assistant to Pre-Med. We have it all! While we aren’t in the city, you can get there quickly by the train or bus. There is so much to do on and off campus! I could not have picked a better school! If you have an questions about college applications, picking colleges, PhilaU, architecture school, or just questions in general, feel free to comment on my blog, or bellow on this blog! I would love to help! I wish you all the best of luck!!! You can do it! We are pleased to announce that the students of the Advanced Architectural Design Academy students have been invited back to the AIA Baltimore Excellence in Design Awards on Oct 10th to display their 2014 end of year project. The project was based around designing and building "Modern Themed" birdhouses. The process started by assigning each student a different client (aka. bird). The students then had to research about modern architecture. They focused on learning the characteristics of the style and the origin of it. The students then started needed to learn about their birds, it was important to learn about the living habits. This all lead to getting their ideas on paper by generating sketches. Once they decided on a few "ideas" they then started to generate their 3d sketch-up models. Once the decided on the sketch-up model they wanted to create the began creating their cut sheets in AutoCAD. Ending with the students building their birdhouses out of poplar. Link to AIA Baltimore Excellence in Design Awards Celebration I would like to extend a huge welcome to the new and returning students of the ARL's Architectural Design Academy. This year will be full of new challenges. I'm looking forward to a very successful year.
